Fall is not near - fall is here! The holiday months are approaching and so is the below 80 degree weather 🫦. But you know what else is approaching?! The pickups of course! I’ll be talking about a personal favorite game series, music, magazines, toys and much more! Grab a coffee or tea of choice and enjoy the pickups for the month of September!
🎮🦑Splatoon 3 + Amiibos
Splatoon became one of Nintendo’s biggest new IP’s - being loved by many fans of the shooter genre! this series saw its beginning on the infamous Wii U in 2015 and since then, it has spawned two sequels that became better and better than their predecessors. I’ve been playing since the very beginning and have seen how the series has evolved, Splatoon 3 is appearing to be the best iteration yet! Splatoon’s gameplay is essentially a third person shooter that involves a LOT of paint and coordination - having the main premise being which team can cover the most ground with their ink on the battlefield and it’s such a fresh take to the shooter formula. There are your standard FPS modes included in competitive if you’d like some variety, but I play mostly in Turf War and getting a group of friends to go on a rampage online is all the more fun! as far as the mechanics go, they are determined by your weapons and gear - being my shining points on why I love the series. The weapons range from paint guns that come in many speeds, large paint brushes and rollers that look comically big, but deadly up close, and even swords that slash ink through the air! the gear however, is a whole other aspect! Being a lover of clothes and fashion itself, the series takes heavy inspiration from street-style and high-fashion, but the cherry-on-top is that each article of clothing also includes stat-buffs for your character. You can be dripped out AND have great stats to take on the competition! The story mode in this one is also very fun and challenging to play and the story to go along with it has deeper lore than you’d think. If you enjoy the FPS genre and want something with a little more eccentricity, Splatoon 3 should be a SPLATASTIC time!
To also add to the game, I purchased a couple Amiibos that were reprinted for the release that I missed out on when Splatoon 2 released in 2017 and I’m happy to have them after all this time! the first one is the Inkling girl from the front cover-art of Splatoon 2 and the other’s are included in a set that comes with Callie and Marie - the first idol group from Splatoon 1. These also give you exclusive in-game clothing items you can add to your wardrobe and each one is unique! I used to be a hardcore amiibo collector when they were super popular, so getting these brings back memories of bomb-rushing local stores to get the ones I wanted!
💿Dirty Bird “Time Traveler” Vinyl
After buying mostly CD’s from one of the greatest DJ’s alive “Dirty Bird”, I finally decided to cop a vinyl for one of his best projects - Time Traveler! this one comes in a 10 inch vinyl and features the artwork that’s scream FUTURISM. Again and again I will say, “go listen to Dirty Bird!”.
There’s nothing I love more than physical magazines - feeling the pages glide over your fingertips that’re full of advertisements, writing segments, and small photo spreads slapping the reader with vibrant colors and hi-def scans. The lovely people at dekoponmag published their first issue that features many online creatives who’re featured in detail with their names, occupations, interests, favorite foods and even their favorite designers and full breakdowns of what they’re wearing. Also included are products, clothing, art pieces, poems, and advertisements - all made independently by these very talented people and I love that this volume celebrates many different walks of life and It inspires me to share what I love! There are even some people I’ve followed for a while like Ann3Her0, and MiseryElliot and It’s amazing to see their work published in a magazine! Magazines have moved to a digital format as the years go by, but there’s always something more monumental and official to have a physical version and I’ll always appreciate that. If you want to read up on some great creatives and see some cool shit, give the first issue a read!
FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly) is a cult-classic anime series created by the legendary studio GAINAX that’s about growing up in the most exaggerated way imaginable. It features character’s going through fleeting feeling of love, bravado, sadness and uncertainty of their future all while fighting robots and aliens along the way. This six episode anime is drawn beautifully by the acclaimed studio with such care and detail and this book documents it well! From the vibrant illustrations of the cast, to the hand drawn sketches of scenes throughout that I remember so vividly and I love seeing it all - constantly appreciating the craft of animation. Yet another addition to the collection of artworks!
🧸🛸GU x Undercover UFO Angel Figure + A Handful of Be@rbricks
Undercover is known for its long history in fashion and Jun Takahashi dips his hand in every category available. From clothing, to furniture, to shoes and even figures and toys - being what I have the most of from the Japanese fashion house. This one is titled, “UFO Angel”, which is a depiction of an anthropomorphic angel that looks more like a frog with wings and a UFO helmet. Love the vintage cartoon style with a sci-fi twist and it’s a fairly hefty figure that feels premium!
To go with the figure are these three series 44 Bearbrick figures I got from the same event and they range from baseball logo-mania, a cute doodle-style, and I am not sure what the other one is, but it is cool nonetheless. Adding more to the Bearbrick collection that grows as time flows!
