The month of May is moving on and as we finish it up, here are some pickups that include big pants, eccentric eye wear, nostalgic tees and much more!
🕶Vintage Oakley Sunglasses
Lately I’ve seen a lot of buzz around the brand Oakley. From the partnership between Brain Dead with their resurrection of the “Flesh” sneaker to seeing people wearing a lot of the older sunglasses models that were popular in the early 2000’s. the Y2K style is a very prevalent trend at the moment, so to see a long time brand who was popular then rise up now isn’t surprising. As it’s been getting warmer, my mind has been on acquiring some new sunglasses for the spring/summer and as I was doing my rounds at the local thrift, these grabbed my attention! This model is very lightweight, but not to a level of daintiness that feels like it’ll break if you aren’t careful. My favorite aspects of Oakley sunglasses will always be the obnoxiously futuristic frames and the chunky temples with that silver “O” sticking out and these fit the description. Trying to grow the sunglasses collection slowly with these joining the roster.
When I think of California, one of the first staple brands that come to mind will always be Ben Davis. The legacy brand has been around since the mid 1930’s and has stood the test of time! I have a couple of their work shirts, but haven’t dabbled into their bottoms until now. Upon my grand search for some wide pants to add to the arsenal, my first big want was a pair of Rick Owens Geth Jeans due to the wide fit and that beautiful 12 inch leg opening, but it being Rick Owens means that they’re expensive. After passing on them for now, I came across the Gorilla Cut variant of the Ben Davis Work Pant that features a wider cut compared to the original Ben model and has a nice 11 inch leg opening, so I decided to give them a go. These come in a 10 oz blended twill and are very thick and durable, which is something I love in a pant. They keep their shape and pair well with almost every shoeI own. These are the perfect wide bottom for the price!
👕Stray Rats x Sonic The Hedgehog “CHAO” Tee
Growing up, I played hours of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on my GameCube and enjoyed the hell out of it. From the fast-paced action/platforming stages, to the shooting gallery segments, and even the hunt to finding the missing emerald pieces, this game offered a lot of variety at the time. It didn’t stop there because a fan favorite side game that me and many other SA2 fans loved was the Chao Garden where you would raise these cute little creatures called “Chao”. It was a fun pet simulator that had you put your Chao in fun mini games that tested your Chao’s abilities, which you can boost their stats with items you’d get in the main game.
Video game aside, the t-shirt is simplistic, but brings back so many memories of that time. This ringer tee features the hero and dark versions of the Chao in front and the back has a cute quote with the collaborator Stray Rats. Love a good tee as much as I love the adorable Chao!
📚Manga
Soul Eater Manga (Volumes 9-11, 14, 19, and 22)
The hunt to complete the full set continues and this month I copped a large chunk of the volumes I still need! I’ve been keeping an eye on Amazon to see if certain volumes would restock and a couple that were more expensive on the third-party market were sold at retail through Amazon! So I copped what I could and now I only need Volume 16 and 17!
My Dress Up Darling Volume 3 and 5
My recent favorite manga/anime has been My Dress Up Darling! I preordered volume 5 that originally was supposed to be released in April, but was pushed back to May and now it’s finally here. Volume 3 though has been a journey to acquire cause it’s been sold out for months and I’ve been searching far and wide to fill in the gap in my collection that’s been irritating the completionist in me. My checking Amazon everyday has provided fruitful because I caught a restock that at first was saying “temporally out of stock” but it still let me add to cart! It was a slim chance, but I got a shipping notice on the volume, so now I finally can end the hunt on volume 3 and comfortably pre order the rest!
🎶Tyler The Creator- Call Me If You Get Lost Vinyl
Been loving this album the past year and what better way to show that love then copping the Vinyl of the spectacular album done by Tyler The Creator! I’ve praised his work countless times in the newsletter, whether it be his music, style or overall creativity in his brand and who he is as an artist. Glad to add this to the collection.
🖤Black Rit Dye (?)
Months ago, I purchased a vintage fisherman’s vest that was a mustard yellow color covered in dirt and grime, but it was a cool layering piece I can see myself wearing for the spring/summer. Since then, it had been stored away in a basket full of discarded clothes that I’d get to eventually, but the idea of revitalizing it sprung up since it’s been getting warmer. I’ve been noticing Instagram accounts like Unsound Rags that would dye various tees in black that were originally a different color and that had me curious. I purchased a pack of black Rit Dye and a large stainless steel pot from a local thrift to hold the soon to be vest! I chose the stove-top method to dye the vest due to the heat of the water benefiting the process of the dye latching onto the garment more effectively. After that I would dump out the dye water, hose it down in the pot, wring it out and let it dry and the results were great. Now I have a great layering piece to spice up a basic summer outfit and I encourage you guys to experiment with some pieces you don’t wear anymore by giving them a new life!
