Goodbye to the cold months of winter and hello to a new Spring, which means the pickups are warming up! Here are a list of items that I picked up that include chunky footwear, wardrobe staples and some video games I’ve been excited about since they were announced!
Eytys Black Detroit Derbies
I’ve had about a couple years of experience with the derby style of footwear and I’ve enjoyed every pair I’ve came across, so this was a next step into a favorite of mine. This pair is especially hulking and intimidating at first glance, but are elegantly well done. From the shiny leather, to the square toe and thick sole, these are exclusively being worn with wide cut pants to complement the oversized derby. It’s a fun change of pace and I’ve been enjoying every wear since!
Shigenori Soejima Artworks 2004-2010 Book
Shigenori Soejima is famously known for his character work from the Persona series and is how I came to discover yet another all time favorite illustrator. My significant other purchased this for me as a birthday present, but came a bit late due to shipping problems from Japan. It was definitely worth the wait because it’s full of beautiful scans of the iconic art from Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, and Stella Deus along with some artwork for anime series and one off promo pieces. Another all time great who’s legacy shows no slowing down!
Vintage Wool Houndstooth Blazer
A blazer has been something I’ve never tried myself, but after seeing some fits of Robert Paterson wearing an oversized Jil Sander blazer and Tyler the Creator wearing a similar wool hounds tooth one, I got curious in trying one for myself. This one is a nice medium-weight with a satin-esque inside that feels nice and not itchy like the wool outside. It also features shoulder pads which were popular way back when, but I enjoy them because of the grand silhouette it gives my torso. Love this start of a potential new avenue in my style and I’d suggest trying it out to give yourself a new look!
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
It’s crazy that it’s been 9 years since this game released on the PlayStation 3. I preordered it in 2013 because I was so head first into the series after playing Persona 4 Golden and I love fighting games, so this was a match made in heaven. I’ve been waiting for a port since and they finally delivered! So far it’s just as fun as I remember, but I forgot how much they “personafied” this great fighting game. They were able to add status ailments a-like to an rpg, added insta-kill supers that would end the match immediately and incorporated attack and SP boosts to the mix! This game also combines characters from Persona 3 and 4 into the mix, so there’s that crossover appeal that shows your favorites from each game interacting with one another. The Story mode is very much a visual-novel with fights in between because there’s a LOT of text to read over, but if you love the series as much as I do, you’re in for a great story. BUT, if you’ve never touched a Persona game, it holds its own as a great beginner-friendly fighter due to the easy to learn button inputs and even features auto-combos that are done with pressing one button! I’m definitely going to buy the Nintendo Switch version as well to have it on the go and show my support so that If the game proves successful, Atlus will see there’s interest in the fighting games and maybe make a Persona 5 fighter! If you love Persona or fighting games, please give this one a try!
Oree NYC 1917 MCOTR-22 High Sneaker
The Converse Chuck Taylor is immortalized as a classic shoe and will stand the test of time and the Rick Owens Ramones have been very popular as a “fashion” alternative and Ray Miah has found the perfect sweet spot in-between, but added distinct design elements that makes it it’s own! From the high grade duck canvas upper, to the unique “Oree” insignia displayed within the contrast stitching, and the industrial M8 grade zipper on the back, it shows how much Ray cares about the production and effort that goes into his product and seeing the end result of an idea becoming reality is always something I love to support.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby’s first foray into true 3D took this long to happen and I can say that they did it very well! This entry has Kirby thrown into an abandoned world to save his waddle-dee companions and figure out where he’s been taken too. The formula you know and love is still here, featuring familiar power ups like fire, ice and sword abilities, but now you can upgrade each one with new abilities and how they affect combat. The first boss battle I came across was something I haven’t seen from the series because it was a lot more interactive and spacious in design due to the new perspective of gameplay. Playing through a new Kirby game has always a fun time for me, but this new installment has me taken back with excitement and I couldn’t recommend it enough!
