For the lovely month of February, here are some pickups that include some accessories, music, a new favorite manga of mine, an early birthday present and much more!
Years ago, I’d typically keep up with seasonal anime as they release and it would be a ritual of picking a handful of new anime to watch and view all the first episodes to see what I might want to drop or keep up with. Nowadays, I seem to get burnt out with keeping up with so many new series being released, but this season, I discovered one that has me hooked! The slice of life genre of anime has always been my favorite and this one is another fun one. It involves a timid and quiet student that gets involved in creating cosplay for one of the most popular girls in school who is a closet otaku that wants to get into cosplay and doesn’t know how to create clothes. Since then, I’ve gotten as many manga volumes as I can, but I haven’t been able to get a hold of the third volume that’s strangely hard to find. If you love clothes, cosplay culture or love anime, you’ll enjoy this one!
📚Vivienne Westwood Catwalk Book
Shoutout to my significant other for gifting me this book for Valentine’s Day! This thick hardcover beauty features 40 years of Westwood’s collections on the catwalk that include phenomenal pieces of clothing that invoke Vivienne’s rebellious punk ethos with numerous textiles and silhouettes for each garment. Also featured in the book are interviews and autobiographies of the respected designers who work for the fashion house and how each collection came to be. The book itself has some great details that include a textured cover that feels like a plaid shirt and has cloth bookmarks bound to the spine. My introduction to Vivienne Westwood has only been the jewelry, but this book has opened a whole new perspective to the longstanding brand and I look forward to reading about the history!
👟 Rick Owens Birkenstock Boston
It’s been a minute since I’ve purchased an item associated with Rick and this one is one I’ve been hunting for. Shoutout to my discord friend Sandy who gave me some intel on a website that had Rick Owens Birkenstocks for the low low! I copped the last size and received them a week later as an early birthday present to myself, so thank you again! This all matte black leather mule features an elongated strap that’s distinctive to the Rick Owens collaboration and slightly drags on the floor to give that almost cargo look if that makes sense. These are extremely basic in design, but are an essential everyday slide you can throw on with anything and I always recommend a timeless pair of Birkenstocks!
💍 Sliver Rings
My prioritization as of late is to acquire more accessories to add more depth into my outfits I already have and cop less clothing than usual. I added some more rings to the arsenal and these two haven’t left my fingers since! The first ring I copped was a vintage .925 sterling silver biker ring that at first glance looks a lot like Chrome Hearts, but it cost me way less. It has the perfect patina throughout and because it’s silver it goes with everything. This other piece comes from a silverware utensil you’d use for a morning breakfast or an evening dinner, but now it’s being repurposed as an interesting and unique ring! This ring wraps around your finger in a very snake-like way that feature’s a crudely etched picture of a child and has “Annette” next to it. I don’t know who’s grandma this belonged to, but I appreciate the ring that’s been made out of it. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on accessories and hitting up thrifts and vintage stores is always a fun way to look for one of a kind jewelry.
🎶 “Channel Orange” by Frank Ocean Vinyl
Finally, one of my all-times has been pressed onto vinyl and I have It added to the collection. I’m aware that there wasn’t a legitimate vinyl release when Channel Orange debuted, so this one is a bootleg. Needless to say, it isn’t a knock on the vinyl itself because It’s of a good quality and this is the only way to get it on vinyl. I’ve had the CD and fully listened to the album countless times, so to have it in another format is amazing in my eyes and if you haven’t listened to it already, please do!
🧸 Charmy Chan Doll by Kodama Sangyo
I recently went to San Francisco for my birthday and hit up the usual favorite spots plus some new ones and the one stop I go to is my favorite toy shop Wootbear. They had this figure in one of the display windows and the color caught my eye! this figure is made of a soft vinyl and is hollow in weight, but is of good quality and the details are very nice. This color of green has been getting my attention as of late maybe due to the weather change and of course that means an influx of greens blooming about.
📚”Catherine: Full Body” Visual and Scenario Collection
Another acquisition from my trip was purchased at Kinokuniya San Francisco which is a Japanese-based book retailer that has a TON of import books and manga! The first floor has lots of literary books and crafts for old and young, but the second story is a weeb’s dream because its filled with manga that’s both in English and Japanese, Anime/Video Game soundtracks, merchandise and of course Animation/Storyboard books. My favorite part of the store is the selection of animation books that feature everything that went into story, character design, and production before that property is released. Catherine is one of my favorite puzzle games of all time and I was elated that they had a book dedicated to the process of creating this gem! The book features scans of promo art, storyboards, character profiles and even the plot of the story that contains many different good/bad endings you can get in-game. Yet another book to add to the collection!
