The leaves are starting to grow in, flowery scents are in the air, but so are the allergies 🤧. Anyways, it’s the end of April so that means it’s time for a round-up of some April pickups! Also, this post marks a year of the Caveman Corner newsletter so thank you to everyone who has taken the time out of their day to read what I have to say and it’s moved by so fast! Thank you as always 💜
On the 2nd of April, I went to the Call Me If You Get Lost Tour in Sacramento andit was spectacular! From the stage design, visuals and overall performance from Tyler, he’s always a master at story telling through his music. Seeing him two times prior, he’s grown so much overall and this time around was his best yet. the openers as well were phenomenal, being the new star Teezo Touchdown, veteran LA native Vince Staples and the show-stopping Kali Uchis!
Before the show, I went to the merch booth to see what they had and of course I needed a tee for the event, but I also saw a small stack of 40ml vials of the new French Waltz fragrance I’ve been wanting to try out! It’s my first time buying my own fragrance and it’s a great first try due to the flowery but woody scent. In a Vogue article for the pop-up shop that launched his new luxury line, he described a trip he had taken in Lake Tahoe where he was jet-skiing aimlessly and he discovered a spot where he would dry off and reminisce in that moment, which would inspire the direction of the scent. Being inspired by the lakes of Tahoe is nostalgic to me personally because I would take bi-yearly trips with my family and every time I go, that scent of wood and lake water would bring me back to those moments I’ll never forget. If you’ve never had a fragrance, this is absolutely a great first choice!
👟Nike x Undercover React Boot
My word of the year for my style has been “nuance”. Whether it be statement pieces that stand out and take all the attention to smaller pieces like jewelry that still add flavor, so say it with me; “nuance”!
As a prime example, these Nike x Undercover React boots can be used as the standout piece AND can be worn as an essential. These were first shown off at Undercover’s FW19 show in a couple of looks that evoke a 17th century time traveler due to the futuristic footwear with feathered hats, long coats and hounds tooth pattering. Also included was a collaboration with Stanley Kubrick’s “ A Clockwork Orange” that had imagery from the famous film on many garments such as pants, jackets, sweaters and t-shirts and a collaboration with Valentino that featured a theme of UFO’s, Beethoven and Edgar Allen Poe which ties in together with the futuristic 17th century crossover.
As far as what I love about these boots is how futuristic and detail driven they are. From the full-length front zipper, to the various leathers and nylons, plastic boot handles and even a pump system that tightens the ankles for a more secure fit! They also feature the react sole that’s very comfortable and makes wearing them very enjoyable. Wearing these feels like I’m in Jet Set Radio or competing in a Dance Dance Revolution competition and It’s very fun wearing some outlandish pieces like these!
👜Porter Yoshida Bag
My everyday APC tote bag has treated me well these past couple years and I used other totes from time to time, but I’ve been searching for the perfect crossbody bag as opposed to the tradition tote straps that sit atop my shoulder. I recently visited 2nd Street in San Francisco and found this nylon beauty sitting on a shelf for a low $80 compared to the 300$+ retail price it goes for. It did come with two defects, one being a rip along the back side of the bag and an ink stain inside of the bag, but both can be easily ignored and otherwise this is a great everyday bag. My love for vintage military bomber jackets and the utilitarianism of it all is why I gravitated to loving this bag upon first glance because it features a black nylon outside with a bright orange inside lining. I purchased a strap off of Amazon so now it’s a perfect crossbody bag that won’t tire out my shoulders or fall off.
📚Akira Animation Storyboards 2 (OTOMO THE COMPLETE WORKS 22)
Big Akira fanatic here! I love this series whether it be the manga or the cult-classic film and Otomo is one of my all-time favorite illustrators. This book features scans of story boards and hand drawn sketches by Otomo himself for the film and it’s so awe inspiring to flip through page after page seeing history in its beginning form. The book itself features an almost rubber book opening that has that scent of inflatable pool toys you’d play with in the summer as a kid. Otomo truly is one of the greatest to ever touch a pen!
I’ve been collecting vinyl records for many years from local stores, concerts and websites, but I’ve never copped a player to play them off of due to my slim knowledge of what to play them on and what speakers would be the most optimal. Finally, I purchased this slim and sleek beauty with some mid range speakers to enjoy the amassed collection of my all-time favorites to listen to in the most pure and intimate form. From the motion of laying down the record and switching sides, to the crackling that resonates through the speakers and the crystal clear audio makes listen to music all the more surreal. Audio Technica is a great brand to start off with and if you need an entry level player, give this one a try!
